HOMECOMING TIPS FOR FRESHMEN: CHOOSING & STYLING YOUR MINI DRESS

You're entering your first year of high school! What an exciting time. There will be many firsts to experience—including homecoming.

Of course, you know you need to dress to impress. But you're probably looking for more advice than that, right? Well, you're in the right place. Read on for tips on how to nail your homecoming look.

🌷 Five Tips for Nailing Your Homecoming Look 🍑

From picking the perfect homecoming dress to choosing accessories, here are five homecoming tips for freshmen.

1. Choose the right silhouette

Our first homecoming tip for freshmen is: Pick the right silhouette for your body type.

By spending a few minutes researching different silhouettes, cuts, and necklines, you'll be able to narrow down the options and find your perfect homecoming dress a whole lot faster.

Some of the most popular silhouettes for homecoming dresses are:

  • - Babydoll
  • - A-line
  • - Bodycon
  • - Fit and flare

Of all these options, the A-line silhouette is a fabulous choice because it's universally flattering. It accentuates a woman's natural waistline and flares at the waist, creating an hourglass shape. It's perfect for any body shape.

2. Find a flattering color

Our second homecoming tip for freshmen is: Pick a flattering color for your dress. This is another step that freshmen often overlook when creating their outfits. But trust us, it's important!

Take a look at this blog to find out which colors will complement your skin tone the most. You'll find plenty of options that'll make your complexion pop!

Of course, no homecoming look is complete without some metallic details. But which should you choose—gold, rose gold, or silver?

Typically, all will work well with any color. But to keep your look cohesive, our advice is to choose one and stick to it! (This styling tip applies to your accessories too.)

3. Wear neutral-colored shoes

Our third homecoming tip for freshmen is: Wear neutral-colored shoes.

At homecoming, you'll see lots of colorful dresses—and we totally encourage you to wear something bright too. But if you decide to wear a colorful dress, there's no need to rock a bold shoe. Let your dress be the star of the show.

Instead, choose a neutral color like nude, black, gold, or silver. (Bonus: you'll likely wear a neutral-colored pair of shoes again! So consider it an investment.) Our personal favorite of the bunch? Nude! They'll create the illusion of longer legs.

You can also lengthen the legs with a bit of heel. If you're comfortable, wear heeled sandals. But remember—you're in for a night of dancing! To add stability, choose a thicker heel.

4. Don’t overdo your jewelry

Our fourth homecoming tip for freshmen is: Don't overdo your jewelry. A little will go a long way!

Homecoming is an exciting event, so you may be tempted to wear all the bling. But you don't want to distract everyone's attention from your dress, hair, makeup, and most importantly, your pretty face!

Some girls will opt to go without any jewelry. A bare neckline can be beautifully bold!

If you want to wear jewelry, our best styling advice is to choose one or two pieces. Necklaces work best with sweetheart or deep-V necklines. Got a pair of shoulder-grazing earrings you want to wear? Pin your hair back or pull it up to show them off!

5. Style your hair according to your neckline and sleeves

Our fifth and last homecoming tip for freshmen is: Style your hair according to your neckline and sleeves.

Choosing a hairstyle for homecoming is quite the decision. But the neckline and sleeves of your dress will help you narrow down the options.

If your dress has a higher neckline, like an illusion or boatneck, you may want to pull your hair up to elongate the neck. We also recommend rocking an updo or half-do if your dress has fancy or big sleeves. You don't want to bury them with your hair!

If your homecoming dress has a low neckline and thin straps (or is strapless), you can totally wear your hair down—but make sure it's styled!
