WHAT TO WEAR TO A GREAT GATSBY THEMED PROM
Prom is fast approaching! To create more hype and excitement, many schools choose themes for their prom night. Today, we're discussing what you should wear to a Great Gatsby-themed prom.
Not familiar with the Great Gatsby? It's a 1925 novel written by Scott Fitzgerald and was later adapted into a film. (Hello, Leonardo DiCaprio!) The story depicts the heyday of the 1920s: riches, glamor, and lavish parties. In other words, you're in for a fabulous and luxe prom night.
With a prom theme like this one, you'll need a chic prom dress to match. Here are five prom dresses perfect for a Great Gatsby prom theme.
1. Mesh red dress with rhinestones
Women's evening attire in the 1920s was ultra glamorous. So for a Great Gatsby prom theme, you need to dress to the nines. One easy way to do that? Choose a prom dress with embellishments.
You can't go wrong with a dress featuring beads, sequins, or rhinestones. They'll instantly dial up the elegance. Great Gatsby-themed attire also incorporates a lot of different fabrics and textures. Lace, mesh, fringe, feathers—nothing is off the table!
With the right pattern, embellishments can also create a slimming effect. Paired with an A-line or mermaid silhouette, you'll have an hourglass shape for days!
What color should your bedazzled dress be? It's common to find gold and silver embellishments on red, black, and white dresses. With detailing like this type of dress, it's okay to choose a classic color. Heads will already be turning in this number.
2.Off-the-shoulder gold sequin dress
A Great Gatsby prom theme is synonymous with luxury. What's more luxurious than a gold dress?
If you're looking for a sexier look, then choose a prom dress that has off-the-shoulder sleeves and a high slit in the skirt. Va-va-voom!
As we mentioned, embellishments are a key ingredient for Great Gatsby-themed prom dresses. Why not choose a dress that's completely covered in gold sequins?
You should probably hold off on accessories with all this gold, right? Wrong! Feel free to rock some gold jewelry, like shoulder-grazing earrings, or a 1920's staple: pearls. Show up to prom night in a fabulous fur coat to complete the look.
3. Black embellished deep-V dress
For a Great Gatsby prom theme, you may be interested in wearing a black flapper dress—but you're not completely sold on a dress full of fringe. You're not the only one.
Instead, try on a black dress embellished with sequins and jewels. Like fringe, these embellishments add a unique texture to your dress. Yes, it’s all black—but there’s nothing plain about it!
For partywear in the 1920s, it was common to find dresses with deep-V necklines. They were on trend then—and they still are today! While you could leave your collarbone bare, women during this time period loved a good accessory. Long strings of pearls, beaded purses, feathered headbands, and art deco jewelry capture this era perfectly.
4. Strappy Silver Dress
There are two types of gals out there: those who wear silver and those who wear gold. If you're a silver kind of gal, then you should wear a silver dress for your Great Gatsby prom! Paired with glitter and mesh, you've nailed this prom theme.
If you have a bold personality, let it shine through in your outfit. Choose a dress with unconventional details, like straps and cutouts. All eyes will be on you on the dance floor!
Sleeveless gowns with deep-V necklines were all the rage in the 1920s—and they still look fabulous today. Paired with a mermaid skirt, they emphasize all the right curves. Complete your look with a fur shawl, and you'll look like you walked straight off the Great Gatsby set.
5. Black and gold sequin dress
Great Gatsby-themed prom dresses offer a lot of the same elements: flashy embellishments, classic colors, and sexy silhouettes. While this dress checks off all the boxes, it's oh-so-unique.
While we see many black dresses paired with metallics, we love that this dress is covered in black sequins on top and gold sequins at the bottom. (It also creates a fringe appearance, no?)
While many Great Gatsby-style dresses are sleeveless, this one rocks spaghetti straps—another twist to this classic look.
To capture the jazzy vibes of this dress, we recommend rocking some long black gloves or a feather headband. Throw your hair up in a slicked-back bun, and you'll look like you danced right out of the 1920s.
